Money v. Love

Category: The Writing Life — David @ 9:21 pm

With my first novel less than 3 months from its pub date, I’m encouraged by the early reviews. Like a child of mine, I hope it does well. But I have to admit my thoughts turn more and more to what comes next. That’s where things get complicated. For almost a decade, I’ve researched the Conquest of Mexico by Fernando Cortes and his fellow Spaniards. I’ve read some 60 books, taken hundreds of pages of notes, created a 40-page outline, developed dozens of characters, and written 100,000 words of a first draft.

At the same time, however, almost like a child screaming for attention among older siblings, another novel has captured my attention. The working title is Hattie and the Hurricane, and it’s more in the Resurrecting Randi genre. (Those who like the first will like the second.) I bill the book as a combination of Bonfires of the Vanities and Prince of Tides. Sarcastic, funny, family…and hidden tragedies that humans have to deal with.

So, sorry Cortes, but every morning now I wake up wanting to nothing but work on Hattie. Cortes might well make more money; Hattie is what I love.

  2. Knowing when a book will be finished and published is a challenge, but if forced to guess, I believe my novel in progress (Hattie and the Hurricane) will be in your local bookstore in about three years. Sounds long, I know…
